We sort books into a number of categories of fiction and non-fiction to make it easier for you to find them. To understand the scheme we use, please consult the list shown below

FICTION

Anthologies Collections of the works of multiple authors.
Fiction (Modern) Written in the past 20 years.
Literary Classics Prose, anything you might read in English class, also collected works of single authors belonging to the "canon".
Mystery Spy stories, true crime, and thrillers.
Mythology and Classics Myths and folk tales from any culture as well as Greek and Latin authors in the original and translation.
Science Fiction Also includes fantasy fiction and graphic novels.

NONFICTION

 
Adventure Together with Sports. Stories of the type Kon Tiki and Into Thin Air would be found in this category.
   
Africa History, Sociology, and Anthropology of Africa
   
Animals Together with Pets. Some fictional accounts but mostly caring for pets, varieties of pets, and training and wild animals.
Anthropology Together with Sociology. Cultural relativity, cross-cultural comparisons.
Architecture Architecture and design.
Archaeology Includes old and new world ancient art and ancient history.
Art Books about art and artists.
Biography Biographies of writers, political leaders, Biographies of people who are famous in the other categories in this scheme will be found in their field; e.g. a biography of Florence Nightingale would be found in medicine.
Business Together with Economics. Classics in this category and all books in these subjects less than 10 years old.
Children Books for children and young adults to read; not books about children.
 
Computers Together with Math. Computer language books, otherwise manuals from the last 5 years or less.
Cooking Any book with recipes, wine and bar guides, "foodie" books and books written by people associated with any of those, e.g. Ruth Reichl and M. F. K. Fisher.
Crafts Together with Hobbies and Games. Needlework, collecting, photography instructions, how to draw, paint, knit, etc.
Criticism Mostly literary criticism as well as some cultural criticism and biographies of writers. Also contains Cliff Notes.
 
Dance Together with Theatre. Includes history of, criticism, how-to and biographies of important contributors
Decorative Arts Collecting (such as ceramics, dolls, etc.) decorating, furniture, costumes, feng shui.
Ecology Together with Nature. Includes conservation, field guides, and birding books.
Economics Together with Business. Classics in this category; otherwise books from the last 10 years.
 
Education Books for and about teaching as well as histories of schools and universities.
Essays All types of essays, both fiction and nonfiction
 
Foreign Languages Books written in French, German, Italian, and Spanish are classified under those headings. All the rest of foreign language books are in Miscellaneous Languages. Art and archaeology books in foreign languages are in those categories rather than in foreign languages. Latin and Ancient Greek are in Classics.
 
Games Together with Hobbies and Crafts. Chess, bridge and other card games, Sudoku, crossword puzzle books.
 
Gardening Everything from landscape design to flower arranging.
 
Gender Studies Feminism, the men's movement, and homosexuality.
 
Health Together with Medicine. Books on improving or preserving health written by M.D.s and mostly for the layman. Books on dieting are in Self Help. Books on exercise are in Sports.
HISTORY  
American United States history only.
British All of the British Isles, yes, Ireland too.
Continental Europe including Russia and the former USSR.
Military Wars, armaments, battles, and anything else military
  World Canada, Mexico, Latin America, Australia, Africa, Asia, general world histories, histories of World Wars I and II.
   
Hobbies Together with Crafts and Games. Needlework, collecting (those types that are not decorative arts), photography, blank books, how to paint, draw, knit, etc.
How-to Anything involving household or vehicular repair or remodeling. All books about cars.
Humor Cartoon books, Garrison Keillor, P. G. Wodehouse, Thurber and reference books that might be considered "bathroom reading" such as Why do Clocks Run Clockwise?
Language/Linguistics Grammar books, history of language, how-to-write books, writer's and publisher's guides.
Journalism Books about newspapers, reporters and columnists, and books about news media.
 
Law Books about famous trials and famous lawyers.
 
Maps Together with Travel.
 
Math Together with Computers. Books about famous mathematicians, classic mathematical treatises, e.g. Fermat's Last Theorem.
Medicine Together with Health. Medical books written mostly for laypersons, alternative medicine, dealing with healthcare systems, individual diseases. Not dieting (self help) or exercise (sports).
 
Middle East History, travel, commentary, biographies of notables, and anything else dealing with the Middle East plus North Africa and Afghanistan.
 
Music Sheet music, song books, music appreciation books, hymnals, and biographies of musicians and composers.
 
Nature Together with Ecology. Includes conservation, field guides and birding books.
 
New Jersey Together with Princeton. Books about New Jersey or Princeton as well as books by local authors.
Occult Astrology, extra-terrestrials, Bermuda triangle, human spontaneous combustion and ghosts.
Old and Unusual Collectible books, books that can be used as "breakers".
 
Performing Arts Movies, TV, movie guides, biographies of movie or television personalities.
 
Pets Together with Animals. Some fictional accounts but mostly caring for pets, varieties of pets, and training.
 
Philosophy Specific philosophers, philosophical movements, and some authors who might also be considered to be religious leaders or political philosophers, e.g. Martin Buber or Karl Marx.
 
Photography Large "coffee table" books filled with photographs. Not books on how to photograph (see Hobbies).
 
Plays Anything with dialog, including movie scripts.
 
Poetry Anything in verse.
 
Politics Recent politically active figures and events and political science.
 
Princeton Together with New Jersey. Books about local areas or by local authors.
 
Psychology Books by professional psychologists, not self-help materials.
 
Reference Dictionaries, almanacs, atlases, thesauruses, testing guides, books about books, books about printing history and book collecting.
 
Science Astronomy, physics, chemistry, biology, geology and all the other laboratory sciences as well as biographies of well known scientists
 
Self-Help Marriage counseling, child-rearing, grieving, alcohol rehabilitation, dieting, beauty, fashion, etiquette, retirement, conduct of life and social skills. This category is for books written primarily for the lay person.
 
Sociology Together with Anthropology. Patterns of social relationships, group interactions, and urban studies.
 
Shakespeare Anything by or about the "Bard".
 
Sports Together with Adventure. Individual and competitive sports, exercises.
 
Theatre Together with Dance. Includes history, criticism, how-to, and biographies of important contributors
 
Travel Together with Maps. Memoirs of trips, descriptions of areas, travel guides (as recent as possible), hotel and restaurant guides not over 5 years old.
